From Waterbirth to Empowered Choices: Crafting Your Unique Birth Story!

Updated: Jun 13, 2023

When I sit down to write out a blog, it isn’t necessarily planned. I do keep a log of content topics but most of the time, I’ll be doing something else when I am “hit” or inspired by a thought. Today, I was thinking about my seventh child. Her birthday is coming up in a couple of weeks and she’ll be turning 21 years old. We call her the “original baby”, due to the 9 year gap between her being the seventh born, and my last born , the ninth child.

As I sit here and reflect on her birth, she was a planned homebirth, which became my one and only waterbirth. She was born into water after a fast and furious labor, in fact, the midwife almost didn’t make it in time. My baby girl weighed 10 lbs. 2 oz.! I can still feel the excitement and “high” I had after I birthed her. Such ecstatic elation!

One thing is for certain, your baby’s birth story will stick with you forever, so make your empowered choices through knowledge. While for most, birth is a joyous time, with much happiness and exhilaration. For others, there is birth trauma and sorrow, and for that I wish I could take away the pain that comes with such tragedy. Much love to those that have suffered such pain.

Each individual's birth story is and will be unique unto themselves. Influenced by beliefs, culture, friends, family, care providers, and what you know or do not know about childbirth. Which brings me to ask you, how much do you know about birth? Your knowledge about your choices and options are as important as naming your baby. Whether you choose to birth in a hospital, a birth center or at home, all will impact your birth story. The same goes for choosing your care provider and birth support person. Make each choice an informed choice, so that you know without a doubt, it was the best decision for you and your family. Having a doula or birth support person can also help you navigate this educational journey as well.

Above all, know this...that knowledge is power. Educate yourself by asking questions. Seek out your resources. Start to create the vision of your birth, early on if you are able. One day you will reflect on your baby’s birth and the more you know about birth, the easier it will be to create a foundation so that you can achieve your desired birth.
